What does Numi mean? The company was named after the Middle Eastern dried lime teasan that our founders, Ahmed and Reem, drank as children. The full name of the lime is Numi Basrah.
How long has Numi been in business? Numi was founded in Oakland, California in 1999.
Are Numi Teas organic? 100% of Numi’s teas and ingredients are certified organic. Numi only sources organic tea, spices and herbs, and we have not found pollutants of any kind in the teas and ingredients that we source. We are committed to sourcing only the highest quality organic, non-gmo teas from farms we have known and partnered with directly for years. Additionally, we require laboratory testing for all of our teas and each purchase we make from our partners is accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis verifying that the teas and herbs meet our quality requirements. Our suppliers are also subject to random and annual inspections to verify organic and fair trade/fair labor practices.
What are Numi’s teabags made of? Our teabags are compostable and made from manila hemp cellulose (plant fiber). They are non-GMO verified, oxygen whitened, and the tag is made from 100% recycled materials and soy-based inks.
Are Numi’s teabag overwraps recyclable/compostable? Our overwraps are made from 72% post-consumer recycled material, are printed with soy-based inks and contain a small amount of foil to retain freshness. Unfortunately, the foil does not allow for the overwrap to be recycled or composted at this time. Please know that we are actively working on an enveloped that is both compostable and able to preserve the subtle and complex notes of premium tea and pure ingredients.
Are Numi Teas gluten free? Yes, all Numi Teas are gluten free. Our teas are packaged in facilities and on machines that do not process or work with gluten.
Are Numi Teas Kosher and/or Halal Certified? Yes, Numi Teas are both Kosher and Halal Certified.
How many mg of caffeine are in Numi Teas? We are asked all the time how many milligrams of caffeine are in a particular cup of tea, and the honest answer is: we don’t know for sure! The environment each year, location of the bush, processing style and method of steeping all has an effect on the amount in your cup. This is why we only provide a range. We use the lower, medium, and high caffeine labeling on our packages based on past tests and the proportion of tea to ingredients in each blend. A 6 to 8 ounce cup of tea generally contains between 15 and 70 milligrams of caffeine. Remember, 8 ounces of brewed coffee has a range of 95-200mg, so you can be sure that your cup of tea will always be lower in caffeine.
